Our Topic for term 2

In class we have been learning all about space as this is our topic for the term! Check out what we have been doing here. So far we have talked all about what things we need on earth for us to survive. Some of us think that aliens are real, but lots of us don't! We designed our own alien and gave them a planet and a name, we then wrote about what they needed to survive on this planet.

Today we watched videos on youtube about Chris Hadfield. He is an astronaut in space that does lots of cool things. We learnt how to brush our teeth, sleep, and make a sandwich in space. A lot of us had some really cool ideas and we all found it really interesting. We talked a lot about gravity and what we would do if we lived up there. It's amazing to think that these astronauts leave their families and live up there for so long!! People are even up there now, wow!
Check out some of Chris Hadfield's videos

My Audience

We are learning to create a positive digital footprint.
We often share personal information when we are online. The people we share with could be our friends and family or people we don't know. We need to make smart decisions about what personal information we share online

Term 2 already??

It's already week 2 of term 2, how has it come around so quickly?? We have been super busy in Tawa so far, decorating the walls with our work and making sure we get things finished! This term our topic is space and we have had lots of discussions about aliens. What do you think? Are they real? We have lots of different opinions! We have been doing lots of google drawings, we designed our own alien and made sure that we thought about what it needs to survive. Can't wait to share some of these with you when we are finished! We have also completed a google drawing of a person in our class, and we added a description of them too. You can see how awesome this work is in the photo above!

Can't wait for the rest of the term, its flying by so fast!!!!

A Slimey Friday Morning

Wow! Another amazing Tawa Class student brought in a science experiment she had created at home. Unique and her sister Nirvana (from Rata class) made some SLIME! Unique shared it with us in class today. "It feels so gooey, sticky and icky" she told us.

Here is a link to Unique's blog How To Make Slime, where she tells us exactly how she made it and what she used. Well done Unique, and thank-you for sharing it with us.

Chrysler the Scientist

Today we were very lucky in Tawa as we had our own SCIENTIST in class. Chrysler, or Mr Chrysler as he was known today, came to school with a volcano he had created at home with help from his mum. He made this from paper mache and painted it so that it looked like a real volcano.
He also brought with him some baking soda and vinegar. We invited Rata class along to watch this with us and we got to see his volcano erupt! We learnt that there was a chemical reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar, we even used red food colouring so that it looked like real lava! It flowed out of the volcano and looked awesome. He even answered some questions about it for us afterwards.
Thank you Chrysler for sharing your learning with us. We look forward to doing more science experiments in Tawa this year.

Term One 2017

Tawa Class 2017

Kia Ora!

Well it is already week 8 and what a great 8 weeks it has been! We have been so busy in Tawa this term that we have forgotten to post any blogs! We have enjoyed lots of fun things so far such as writing recounts, narratives and a procedure, reading heaps of exciting books, working hard on our maths, completing fitness circuits, and learning about Christchurch and different cultures as part of our topic which is "Our Place in the World." Another cool thing that we have been working on is our mihis. These are pretty special to us and we are practising them lots as we want to have them memorised so that we can introduce ourselves to other people in Maori.

Last week on Friday we had a St Patricks mufti day. It was amazing seeing the school as a sea of green. Heaps of us came wearing green wigs, green clothes, and some people even dyed their hair green for a day! It was a heap of fun and a great way to celebrate St Patricks day and the Irish culture. Here are some photos, look at how awesome we all look.... :)

This week we have started swimming. Every afternoon we are walking to the swimming school, even if it is raining! We will be doing this for the next 2 weeks and so far we are really enjoying it. We have some teachers there who are teaching us to swim and how to be safe in the water. This is very important for us as we grow up in New Zealand.

We are super lucky to be a part of Tawa Class this year. We are an extremely cool bunch of kids who are excited to learn new things. This terms value is respect and is something we will continue to focus on. So far we are doing a pretty good job, and our teachers think they are pretty lucky to have us!

We look forward to sharing our learning with you from now on. There are a lot of exciting things happening at Gilberthorpe this year so stay tuned!
